For our first workshop we were introduced to designer Richard Sweeney, who creates amazing sculptures using paper. Some of his work is shown below.
After a demonstration from Richard, we were left to experiment with paper. We had to create our own sculptures using one sheet of A5 paper. We could tear and cut up the paper but not add more paper to it. We were not allowed to use glue and the sculptures had to be able to be unfolded back into a flat sheet of paper.
Here are some of my first attempts.
I found this fairly tricky as I have never tried much three dimensional design before. I started to focus on curving the paper and making small slits in the sides so that the paper could slot together, creating dome like shapes.
I feel that currently the most successful designs are the more simple shapes, though I hope that over the weeks my work will improve and I will be able to create more interesting and complex designs.
